![]() ![]() ![]() As for me, I’ll have my kids skip this book.Įzra's story is poignant, funny, and demonstrates the arbitrary way that high school students segregate themselves into various little like-minded groups. We live in a very troubled culture if we think that this book is appropriate for 13 year olds unless, of course their parents are discussing the book with them as they read it. Too much drinking (I realize that underage drinking isn’t uncommon, but it is done regularly and as a norm). ![]() in the book- “getting head”, a scene in which a girl is caught giving oral sex, “coming”, references to masturbation (not wanting to be caught in the shower and lube in the bedside table), a scene in which two characters give each other oral sex and then talk about one not being a virgin and the other “saving herself”. Here is a non comprehensive list of the sex, etc. There is so much unnecessary sexual content in this book that it takes away from what could have been a great story- a teen rediscovering who he really is, characters dealing with tragedy, and the literature and movie references were fun and smart. I have never written a review but was appalled after reading this book and seeing the ratings for it, especially considering that the only adult rating was by a 13 year old. ![]()

His castration has shaped his entire life, causing him to feel unmanly and forcing him to overcompensate for this with murder and violence. It also seemed like everyone was rejecting or insulting her at every turn and it was almost too much. How many signals does he need to send you, girl? He couldn't have been any more obvious if he'd tattooed "I love Kate" on his forehead. My issues with the book were that no one seemed to love Kate except for one person and it was pretty maddening that she didn't seem to think he loved her. Kate is full of confidence at first, but then as she sees the challenge of her task (mostly due to her mother, her elder sister and their poor reputation), she realizes that she has been almost set-up to the fail. In a weird way, they come to an agreement that if she can secure 3 proposals that her mother will relent and let her go. The book follows our heroine, Kate, who has sworn off marriage and has convinced herself that her best option is to travel to India with her spinster aunt. It was kind of depressing but enthralling all at once. ![]() I'm usually not one for angst-y fiction, but I couldn't put this one down. ![]() ![]() ![]() Contents: The Gernsback Continuum (1981) by William Gibson Snake-Eyes (1986) by Tom Maddox Rock On (1984) by Pat Cadigan Tales of Houdini (1981) by Rudy Rucker 400 Boys (1983) by Marc Laidlaw Solstice (1985) by James Patrick Kelly Petra (1982) by Greg Bear Till Human Voices Wake Us (1984) by Lewis Shiner Freezone (1985) by John Shirley Stone Lives (1985) by Paul Di Filippo Red Star, Winter Orbit (1983) by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling Mozart in Mirrorshades (1984) by Bruce Sterling and Lewis Shiner Here is the definitive “cyberpunk” short fiction collection.
